(publishing) An illustration that is on the page before the title page of a book, a section of one, or a magazine.
This is the Frontispiece to Campbell's edition of Palladio's First Book of Architecture. There are architectural influences in the broken pediment sat atop coupled Corinthian columns. This image also features a portrait of Palladio (the author), himself, in the manner of a classical statue.
